Wins! $95 million for Hwy 1 bus lanes and 24/7 bus lanes on Douglas completed!

GVAT’s work to get bus lanes for BC Transit’s proposed RapidBus network built has produced a big win with $95 million committed to Highway 1 bus lanes to the Westshore. And the City of Victoria met the September 1st deadline for 24/7 bus lanes on Douglas that GVAT requested. GVAT celebrated the $95 million committed to Highway 1 bus lanes with this letter in the Times Colonist:

Make it stand out

Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

In May, GVAT requested that the City of Victoria create 24/7 bus lanes on Douglas Street by September 1st. Councilor Dave Thompson successfully made a motion to accelerate the simple work to “transition the current time-limited dedicated bus lanes between Hillside Avenue and Herald Street to be in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week” from sometime in 2025 to before the end of 2024.

However, City staff got the work completed before September 1st as we requested! Transit riders will have faster and more reliable service during the very busy first half of September, when UVic and Camosun students return to class.

GVAT member group Climate Justice Victoria’s campaign for bus lanes on McKenzie to UVic, which GVAT has endorsed could also see positive results soon as Saanich Council is expected to make a decision in late September or early October. You can find out more, and endorse their open letter, on the CJV website.
